The SolarBank by Next Generation Power Systems is a zero emissions, pollution-free, renewable energy hybrid system which uses solar photovoltaic panels along with an advanced intelligent storage System to decrease and manage peak loads. By utilizing solar energy and stored off-peak utility power, consumers can control peak demand, more importantly, the price and what time of day it is used.

The SolarBank system is a cost effective way to economically utilize solar energy and by using advanced storage technologies, make more efficient use of the existing utility power plants. SolarBank is able to provide peak power on a reliable and economical basis.

Currently there are working prototypes installed on both home and small business applications. These systems have been used as proof of concept on how the SolarBank systems can effectively reduce daytime demand for grid energy.

Applications:

The specific application of the SolarBank system will be to connect an individual system at the service entrance of a home or small business. Specific loads will be selected at the service entrance to be transferred to the SolarBank system when peak demand times occur. These loads will be relieved off of the utility grid and powered by the solar PV’s and the reserve energy of the SolarBank system. The SolarBank system transfers in less than 15 milliseconds (which is faster than the blink of an eye) thus providing a virtually seamless transfer.

SolarBank Objectives:

The SolarBank system is designed to provide clean, renewable power and capacity during times of peak demand when the system can’t keep up due to extreme weather conditions or electrical and/or mechanical problems. The SolarBank system will provide needed renewable kilowatts to the system and help eliminate the need for more generation and transmission/distribution upgrades. Electrical pricing usually peaks at certain predictable times of the day and the season. If generation is constrained, prices can rise significantly during these times as more expensive sources of power are purchased from other jurisdictions or more costly generation is brought online.

A recent Carnegie Mellon University study estimated a 7% shift in consumer power usage during peak periods would have resulted in a $23 billion annual savings. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission estimates that if utilities could reduce peak demand by as much as 7% through variable-pricing schemes, such a shift would save $15 billion a year.

While one of these aforementioned studies is a consumer savings estimate and the other is other a utility savings estimate, they are related. Many investor owned utilities operate on a cost plus basis. The high costs associated with demand periods are passed onto the consumer through pricing increases per kilowatt hour or oftentimes disguised through “fuel cost adjustments” as a separate line item. This is a great debate in the energy field. What is the true cost of producing/delivering energy, factoring in pollution issues, etc.?

The key drivers of the peak power pricing are:

  • Rising price of energy – rising demand/volatility/capacity constraints
  • Sustainability
  • Grid system reliability issues /Transmission restrictions
  • Lack of new generation power plants
  • Global warming/Environmental awareness

What about the cost on the environment and our collective health care systems by continuing to burn coal and/or expend natural gas-fired generation for our power needs?

We are proud that SolarBank technology is a zero emission solution! SolarBank technology also more accurately matches peak loads during the hottest of summer days! Simply put, the hottest days of the year also tend to be the sunniest days of the year.

The SolarBank System can also act as a backup power supply in the event of grid loss which will improve reliability and minimize power outage effects on the customer.

Since the inception of electricity deregulation and market driven pricing around the world, government regulators have been looking for a means to match consumption with generation. Smart meters provide an economical way of measuring this information, allowing price setting agencies to introduce different prices for consumption based on the time of day and the season. Electrical pricing usually peaks at certain predictable times of the day and the season. Interestingly, utilities in some states run into winter peaking scenarios in addition to summer peaks. This would double the cost-effectiveness for generation constraints.

It is believed that billing customers by how much is consumed and at what time of the day will force consumers to adjust their consumption habits to be more responsive to market prices. Realistically, SolarBank technology could enable both the consumer and the utility to ease into their market based pricing for energy consumption during these expensive and constrained peak times. Regulatory and market design agencies hope these “price signals” will delay the construction of additional generation or at least the purchase of energy from higher priced sources thereby controlling the steady and rapid increase of electric prices.

The Power Bank

Your power is our priority. Be prepared with a PowerBank System. The PowerBank System will restore crucial power to your business-quicker than the blink of an eye! When a power outage occurs, the control relay stations will automatically and instantaneously tap into the energy reserve stored by your PowerBank System. Long lasting, too! A PowerBank System differs significantly from a UPS system. Typically a U.P.S. will run on a computer terminal for 10-15 minutes whereas a PowerBank System can run several loads for 24-72 hours! What great insurance to have for that business.

Power Up

Without power many people today can’t even get into their own home because their garage door opener won’t work. How frustrating!

A PowerBank System will keep your lights, TV, phone, gas furnace fan, and sump pump all working-even when the neighborhood is dark due to an outage. Rest assured with a PowerBank System that your family will have power when they need it most. Don’t wait for the next storm or disaster to knock out power to your home. The cost is only pennies per day, but the peace of mind it offers is priceless.

Disaster could be just around the corner

Unreliable power appears there to stay. Due to an aging system, an ever-increasing demand of electricity, and the volatility of weather systems, some distribution systems are experiencing reliability problems. Power failures are a serious concern in both the winter and summer months. Control your energy future now!
